Permanent Lighting in Old Hickory, TN

Permanent Lighting Solutions sends our installers to Old Hickory houses, in the Nashville neighborhood that grew from a DuPont gunpowder plant, with permanent LED roofline lighting in a slim channel matched in color to the trim.

Old Hickory is a Nashville neighborhood in Davidson County, and it began as a wartime factory town. Licensed, insured and certified installers put in the permanent LED roofline lighting for its houses, a slim aluminum channel color matched to the trim. Once it is up, the color is a setting on your phone.

A planned town on the Cumberland

On January 29, 1918, DuPont and the federal government agreed to build a gunpowder plant and a town at Hadley's Bend of the Cumberland River. The plant was laid out in nine units, each able to produce one hundred thousand pounds of gunpowder a day. By the number of people it employed and its sheer scope, it was the largest industrial facility in the state's history.

DuPont designed a permanent village for the foremen, supervisors and officials, first called Jacksonville for Andrew Jackson, with over three hundred dwellings by that November. Many were utilitarian, but the substantial ones borrowed from popular revival styles. The village was meant to be self-sufficient, with a hospital, churches, gymnasiums, a city hall, theaters, a bank and a hotel that could house up to four hundred visitors.

The gunpowder works closed two months after the November 1918 armistice. DuPont acquired much of the village, renamed the community Old Hickory, again for Jackson, and ran a rayon plant there that was in production by 1925. For the next twenty years the company ran the town, and in 1946 it began selling homes to its employees.

Buildings that still stand

The Colonial Revival post office (1934) was designed by federal architect Louis A. Simon. The library (1937) was built by DuPont for its workers and their families in a Williamsburg design of red brick and white trim, with original oak furnishings inside. The Nashville system took it over in 1964, and it was renovated and expanded in 1982. The original post office of 1918, a frame building, stood across from the one that remains.

Hadley School was built in 1935 for the neighborhood's Black children and closed in the early 1970s when schools were integrated. The building is now the Old Hickory Art Center, with open studio time, classes and work from local artists.

Green spaces and the market

Metro Parks runs the Old Hickory Community Center on Donelson Avenue, and the Village neighborhood association's list of green spaces includes Veterans Memorial Park, Rachel's Walk, Old Hickory Beach and 12th Street Field. The farmers market on Hadley Avenue is producer only, with food trucks and live music, and runs from April to mid-September.

Planning an install around the tree lighting

If the roofline is finished by Friday, December 4, it is lit for the tree lighting the next day. Put the house on a sunset schedule and it comes on whenever the sky goes dark, whatever hour the park's tree does. Tell the installers which Saturday you are working toward, and starting early leaves a spare week if it rains.

Old Hickory Christmas lights through a January freeze

A Nashville roofline sees a January that freezes and thaws in a single week, April pollen, July storms and August heat. Down under the roof edge, the lights sit inside the channel, which leaves water running off the roof as it always has. They are rated for roughly 50,000 hours, outside testing backs the UL rating on every component, and in a storm they can stay up. Upkeep is a rinse at gutter time. The system page shows the hardware, and the care page covers the manufacturer's 5-year product warranty and our installers' workmanship warranty.

The app costs nothing: no monthly fee, no annual fee and no subscription, and geofencing is included at no extra cost. Choose red and green for December, or pick any color off the wheel and dim it right down for a quiet weeknight. You can try the looks on the presets page first.
